Throughout our reproductive years, our hormones rise and fall in monthly CYCLES. As we progress towards our late reproductive years, these hormones fluctuate unpredictably. Eventually, in our post-reproductive phase, the production of estrogen and progesterone declines and menstrual cycles come to an end, or CESSATION.

WHO WE ARE

We are a team of Nurse Practitioners and University of Alberta researchers who have developed The Alberta Women’s Cycles to Cessation Clinic, to offer comprehensive care through the journey of perimenopause and menopause.

We strongly believe women's health is a part of public health, and that accessibilility to quality care can be improved for women. To support this belief we are leading a three-year pilot project designed to demonstrate the need for publicly funded, nurse practitioner–led care that provides comprehensive, evidence-based care designed to support women during perimenopause and menopause.

Through our digital platform ‘Awareness and Understanding in Reproductive Aging’ - AURA, women have access to educational information about perimenopause and menopause, and guidance on physical activity, nutrition, and mindfulness to support you through your journey.

In addition, our clinic embraces research-driven initiatives to advance women’s health care and improve outcomes, helping to shape a healthier future for all women in Alberta.

Women were long viewed as lesser and more troublesome versions of men … This has resulted in inadequate research and education about the female body and in the dismissal of women’s health concerns.
— Dr. Jen Gunter

OUR SERVICES

Our services focus on the assessment and treatment of hormone-related symptoms during perimenopause and menopause. We provide evidence-based hormone therapy for women experiencing symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats, poor sleep, mood changes, brain fog, fatigue, changes in menstrual cycles, low libido, vaginal or urinary symptoms, and other concerns related to hormonal changes in midlife.

Our clinic is intentionally specialized in menopause hormone care so we can offer thoughtful, individualized treatment for this stage of life.

FAQs

Do I need a referral?

No referral is required. You can self-refer to the clinic.

Why do I need to complete a pre-screening before booking an appointment?

Because our clinic provides virtual care, we need to make sure it is safe and appropriate option for you before your first visit. Some health concerns require a physical exam or in-person assessment, and virtual care has limitations for which these cannot be provided.

Is there a cost for services?

Our clinic was created to demonstrate the urgent need for publicly funded womens reproductive health services in Alberta. Because of this commitment, all of our care is fully covered, with no cost to you, through the Government of Alberta Primary Care Innovation Fund. By receiving care here, you are helping drive change, closing gaps, and moving women’s health forward for every woman who comes after you.

How does the clinic incorporate research?

Our clinic is part of a three-year pilot project working to show the need for womens primary care services and Nurse Practitioner led care. Participation in research is voluntary, and the care you receive is the same whether or not you join the research component
